How to Build a Sand Volleyball Court
Posted by admin on January 29th, 2011
A sand volleyball court can provide hours and hours of fun and athletic recreation. Volleyball is a sport that is a great way to spend some time with friends and family, whether you’re hanging out on a sunny weekend afternoon, are looking for a good workout for a few hours, or are challenging others to a competitive game. Whatever gets you on the court, having a sand volleyball court is a great addition to your home or other recreational space. Building a sand volleyball court is not that difficult if you follow a few basic tips before you get started to ensure that your court is safe, comfortable and playable when you are ready to get out there and have some fun.
The first thing you need to consider when deciding to build a sand volleyball court is whether you have enough space. Courts should measure sixty feet long by thirty feet wide from the outer edge of each boundary line. It is also best to maintain about ten feet around each edge of the court for safety. Smaller sand volleyball courts can be built if desired, but these are professional court dimensions. Your sand volleyball court should be situated in a space that is level and has no obstructions to get in the way of the play of the ball or the players.
Once you have your location picked out for your sand volleyball court, the area must be excavated so that it can be filled with sand. Excavation should be done to a depth of approximately three feet. It is important to take into account proper drainage in and around the court so that your sand volleyball court doesn’t become a mud volleyball court when it rains. To properly drain the court, there should be a drainage ditch at the lowest point of the court that leads away from it and drainage pipe should be put down across the court and should lead into the drainage ditch.
Supports and poles to hold the volleyball net should be put in prior to filling the court with sand. The supports should be located on either side of the court in the middle of the length of the court. Concrete footings should hold the poles and these should be about a foot in diameter and three feet down (the ground is already excavated three feet deep). The poles can be either treated 6″x6″
Beach Volleyball – Fun in the Sun

The popularity of beach volleyball is extensive and it has become a world class sport. We’ll discuss a little of its history and rules.
The game was most likely first played in Hawaii during 1915. That’s where the Outrigger Beach and Canoe Club set up a volleyball court on Waikiki Beach. However most people believe that the true start of the game began in Santa Monica, CA during the 1920′s following the development of the indoor game which began in Massachusetts.
This sport initially began as a type of family entertainment abut due to its low cost and broad appeal, it began to be played worldwide.
It gained a lot in popularity during the Great Depression. At that time many Americans had little cash so they thronged to the beaches as a very low cost way of spending their leisure time.
Different activities on the beach were initiated including beauty contests and other types of entertainment. Beach volleyball was one of the pastimes. As the popularity of this sport began to grow, sponsors noticed which ultimately culminated in the establishment of an International Volleyball Federation during the 1970′s.
By 1986, the International Volleyball Federation officially recognized the sport. Since that time the sport has continued to grow and has moved into Asia and Europe.
In 1999, there were 12 open tournaments for men and six for women. The total prize money exceeded $3.6 million. During that same year, the sport attracted 460,000 fans and spectators.
Beach volleyball was started as a demonstration sport during the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. A short while later, it was announced that the sport would be officially included in the next Olympics in Atlanta.
Regarding the rules, here is a summary:
- The game is played on the beach in a court which has been laid out to measure 16×8 meters. Each side is divided into 2 equal halves.
- There are two side lines and two end lines which defines the playing area.
- Just like tennis, if someone hits the boundary lines, the ball is still considered in bounds.
- The top of the net is set at 2.43 meters for men’s events and 2.24 meters for women’s events.
- Antennae is attached to the net and positioned directly above the sideline mark.
- The ball itself is made of leather and has a circumference of between 65 and 67 cm.
- A team may hit the ball three times to return it but no one player can hit the ball once.
There are a number of other rules but these are important ones to keep in mind. In any case if you are a fan of beach volleyball or you play it yourself, you will certainly understand why so many people really enjoy the experience.
